With so many brand of laptops, configurations, different needs for the laptop and cost consideration, there are so many things we have to look out for when looking for a second hand laptop.
- Budget : There is absolutely nothing you will want to purchase in life without considering your budget. There is an adage that says “cut your clothe according to your size”. Be reminded that you cannot go for Rolls Royce with the budget of Volkswagen. There must be a laptop available for your budget.
- Brand : Laptop brands matter especially when you are buying fairly used. Because if the laptop develops fault you want to be able to replace it without stress. Some popular brand are HP, Dell, MacBook, Lenovo and so on.
- Battery Life : When buying a laptop, battery life matters especially in Nigeria where power is a major issue. It is important that your laptop battery last at least 3 hours. Students moves about with laptops, during presentation and so on.

6. Generation: The generation of computers matters now when choosing a laptop. What do we mean generation? In laptops, the age of the CPU (Central processing unit) is known as the ‘generation’. The newer generation of laptops is more developed, has more features, and is more power-efficient than the older ones.
7. Storage: RAM is considered as primary memory, some laptops come with only 4GB of RAM, but ideally you want at least 8GB on even a budget system and 16GB if you can spend just a little more. For most folks, 32GB or more is more than enough while 64GB and above is reserved for power users. On Storage Drive (SSD) is even more important than the speed of your CPU. If you can afford it and don’t need a ton of internal storage, get a laptop with a solid state drive (SSD) rather than a hard drive. Because you’ll see at least three times the speed and a much faster laptop overall. Among SSDs, the newer PCIe x4 (aka NVMe) units offer triple the speed of traditional SATA drives.
8. Port and cam : You need to check the ports, USB port, USB C port, HDMI port, SD Card port, the camera and so on.
9. Display: A relatively small screen will probably be fine if surfing the Internet and doing emails are your primary usage. On the other hand if you’ll have multiple applications open or you will be editing photographs, video, sound, running virtual machines, etc. then you will quickly appreciate larger screens.
10. Detachable or x360 : Do you want to buy touchscreen, detachable or laptops that rotate 360 degrees.
